Maro North American Tour
On Saturday, September 17, MARO and Blessing graced the stage at Cafe 939.
The night in the intimate setting started off with Blessing, coming from Houston, TX, taking the audience on a journey through her Covid experience. ‘the girl next door’ is the title of her latest EP, and she opened up with ‘girl like me’, an honest and raw sound combined with relatable lyrics that would be easily categorized as bedroom pop. The stage was all hers, as she quickly captivated the crowd with not only her melodies, but also her jokes and banter in between numbers - making this feel like a room full of friends gathering around for a night of musical storytelling. She definitely made a great first impression on those that did not know her before, while solidifying the love of those that did.
MARO then hopped on the stage, humbly saying hello and beginning her set. Playing songs from her latest album, ‘can you see me?’, MARO began strumming along on the guitar and immediately pulled focus. The energy in the room was comparable to that of a Jacob Collier show (whom she has toured with) - harmonies naturally left the mouths of the audience members, and the room filled with a sound and energy that was so beautiful and indescribable that I still cannot find the words. Outside of the album, she also performed some of her classic hits, including the favorite ‘Flying to L.A” - the crowd hollered with cheer as the first few chords hit their ears, as they immediately knew the song to come. Late in the set, she was joined by Tiny Habits, an emerging group from Berklee, to finish off the night with incredible a cappella-like chord progressions and pure sound.
