Yung Gravy Serves Up Flavor At House of Blues

The gravy train came to Boston in the form of Yung Gravy’s Grits & Gravy Tour this past week at the House of Blues. Yung Gravy is one of those artists who doesn’t fit in a particular box when it comes to genre - you can expect to hear rap, trap, country, pop, and whatever else he’s feeling like at one of his shows. Lots of cowboy hats could be seen amongst fans in the pit, but much like Gravy’s music, almost every age and style could be found in the packed Boston crowd.

Yung Gravy opened up his set with “oops!” off his album Gasanova. Fans would be quick to notice the pink face paint under the singer’s eyes and the rhinestones near his eyelids. Opening act Carter Veil had taken the stage in much more elaborate makeup earlier in the night, and Gravy said he wanted to give it a try himself. This, along with light-up stage platforms and a screen spanning the entire wall behind him, led to a truly immersive and engaging experience for audience members.

Having gained popularity for his songs “Mr Clean” and “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot” on SoundCloud back in 2017, Yung Gravy made sure to perform these right away to get the crowd ready to sing and dance along for the rest of the show. “Lone Ranger, “Super Smash Bros,” and “Forget Me Thots” were other early highlights. In typical Yung Gravy fashion, he made sure to empty a water bottle over the front row of fans during one of these songs. Towards the middle of the set, Gravy played a run of songs by “Baby Gravy” - the collective project of Yung Gravy and rapper bbno$. “You Need Jesus” and “Welcome to Jesus” were some of the selections for the night. Yung Gravy of course had to close with some of his biggest hits - “Betty (Get Money),” “C’est La Vie,” and “On The Hunt” made the cut as the last three songs before Gravy thanked the crowd and left the stage.

There’s certainly something for everyone at a Yung Gravy concert - music, comedy, and more packed their way into the nearly 30-song performance. The Grits and Gravy Tour has two more shows in late November, and Yung Gravy will also be performing at a couple of events in Wisconsin and Philadelphia encouraging people to vote in the upcoming election. You can find more information about that on his website.
