The Space Control Tour
Friday night, Brookline Street in Cambridge was lined with people waiting to get into Sonia for a night full of good old fashioned death metal. This is a co-headlining tour with death metal veterans Misery Index and Origin as well as special guests Wolf King and Wake! Now, not only was this Friday The 13th, it was a special night for one of the guests of honor. Misery Index released their album Complete Control, which is their first album with Century Media!
Wolf King is a four piece, heavy metal band that comes from the Bay Area, CA. It consists of vocalist Timmothy Wilson, drummer Connor White, guitarist Jacob Broughton, and bassist Brian Mojica. They were the opener for the night and they understood the assignment. “Maybe you guys could do a dance off or something, that’d be fuckin tight!” said Wilson to the crowd. They came in with their dark, apocalyptic sound and brought the room to life!
Next up, Wake, a stellar band from Calgary, Alberta. Currently, the band is made up of members Kyle Ball (vocals), Ryan Kennedy (drums), Rob LaChance (guitar), Arjun Gill (guitar), and Josh Bueckert. These guys are comparable to bands like Infernal Coil and Wormrot. Demanding their talents be known, they controlled the room with their relentlessly heavy yet hauntingly beautiful sound.
It was time for Misery Index to take over the stage, and boy did they! This death metal band from Baltimore, MD knows just what to do to get a crowd moving. With songs off of their albums Rituals of Power, Traitors, Heirs to Thievery, Retaliate, The Killing Gods, and newly released Complete Control, they had people moshing and head banging for their sets entirety. The bands influences include Dying Fetus, Terrorizer, and Assück, to name a few, so you can expect that heavy, gritty, face-melting sound when they play! Members Chris Joao (lead guitar), John Longstreth (drums), Mark Kloeppel (guitar/vocals), and Jason Netherton (bass/vocals) make one truly unstopped team.
Setlist: Embracing Extinction, New Salem, Infiltrators, The Choir Invisible, Conjuring The Cull, The Eaters and The Eaten, Ruling Class Cancelled, Naysayer, Ghosts of Catalonia, The Great Depression, You Lose, and Traitors.
Last, but certainly not least, the almighty Origin! This technical death metal group from Topeka, Kansas consists of lead vocalist Jason Keyser, bassist Mike Flores, guitarist Paul Ryan, and drummer John Longstreth. Much like Misery Index, they had complete control over the audience. There was moshing, singing, screaming, stage divers, crowd surfers — you name it, it happened! Jokes and laughs were had in between songs as well which made it feel a bit more intimate as Keyser connected with the crowd. Overall, it was a night to be remembered!
